Traveling Pet Pig
|
The Mobile Vet team goes to the ends of the earth, or at least to the opposite end of the country, to care for this pampered porcine. A squeal for help from a long time housecall client who had moved to New Jersey one year ago has the doctor and his assistant packing their bags and heading for the airport. Mobile Vet received a call in June from their client, desperately trying to make arrangements with the airlines to allow her to fly with her pet piggy to Seattle Washington. She had quite the dilemma; first, getting permission to fly with her pet, and second, how to physically get her on the plane. She pleaded with the airlines to let her bring her pig in the passenger section of the plane, and the officials finally agreed to her request after receiving a letter from her physician stating that Freedom is a therapeutic animal for her mother. Next came the job for Dr. Chris Cauble. |

Dr. Cauble flew from Los Angeles to Philadelphia in October to examine, vaccinate, and issue a veterinary health certificate for her special pet. Freedom was then loaded into a rented van and driven through two states to the airport. Once at the airport the doctors note wasn't enough for the airline officials to accept this unique passenger. Dr. Cauble had to speak with the airline supervisors and other officials to prove that Freedom was healthy, and free of all communicable diseases. Meanwhile, the pot bellied pig was standing outside the airport attracting lots of interested onlookers and answering many questions. Finally permission was granted, and the task of walking Freedom through the airport and onto the plane was at hand. |

Freedom was fitted with a special pink harness, and lifted out of the van. However, once she entered the busy terminal she put on the brakes! Luckily an airline service assistant saw their dilemma and offered the group a ride upon the airport shuttle to the gate. Other passengers stopped and stared in awe at the special cargo; never had they seen such a production, nor such a interesting pet! Once she arrived at the gate Freedom was gently lifted down from the tram and walked down the ramp and onto the plane by the doctor and his assistant. She must have been nervous, or just camera shy, for once she got on board she buried herself under her sheets like a pig in a blanket where, according to her owner, she remained for the duration of the fight. The flight proved successful and both Freedom and her owner are now happily residing in their new home in Seattle, Washington. The Mobile Vet team will be looking forward to going to Seattle next year to see them again for Freedom's annual examination, vaccinations, and trimming. The question now remains, Is there nothing that the Mobile Vet Team can't or won't handle? |
